A week after Easter, the candy will be forgotten. Sadly, so will the rabbit. This Easter, remember: A rabbit is not a toy. If you're not ready to give him ten years of your life, you're not ready to give him as a pet.Easter is a time of sweet confections, bright pastel colors, and baby ducks, chicks, and bunnies. Animals, in particular rabbits, are often given as gifts. Unfortunately, they quickly lose their appeal and in the months following Easter, rescue shelters are flooded with rabbits - the really unlucky ones are simply abandoned outside. The "Make Mine Chocolate" Campaign seeks to educate the public about the responsibilities of caring for a pet rabbit and discourage the practice of giving live animals as gifts. A rabbit is a living creature and the decision to take care for one should not be taken lightly.
Next time someone you know wants to buy a rabbit as a gift, suggest giving chocolate or a stuffed toy instead. Alternatively, local rescues have dozens of rabbits up for adoption and point them to the House Rabbit Society care guides. This topic is very near and dear to my heart because I currently have 2 rabbits, one I rescued after he was abandoned on my university campus. This is a post I made last Easter as well.
